The therapeutic benefits of green tea have been in the news lately. Green tea can be used for everything from fighting the flu to combating cancer. But what you might not know is with green tea, weight loss can become easier. This is because this exotic beverage burns fat and increases metabolism.

A study originating in Obesity Research shows that individuals who have been drinking tea regularly for more than ten years have lower body fat percentages than those who do not drink tea. Green tea is calorie-free and can help provide your body with the daily fluids it needs. Through a combination of exercise and green tea, weight loss can be greatly enhanced.

Meanwhile, a study published in the December, 1999 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition offers further evidence of Green Tea Weight Loss. Dr. Abdul Dulloo led the research at the University of Geneva. Dulloo and his team investigated the effects of green tea on ten healthy young men who ranged in body type from lean to mildly overweight. Participants in the study followed a typical Western diet of 13 percent protein, 40 percent fat, and 47 percent carbohydrates. For six weeks, the men also took two capsules which contained either green tea extract and 50 milligrams of caffeine, 50 milligrams of caffeine alone, or a placebo with every meal. Three times during the research, the team measured the men's energy expenditure - the number of calories used in a 24 hour period - in a respiratory chamber. Researchers also measured the men's respiration quotient, or a measurement of how well the body uses carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. A low respiration quotient means more fats are being metabolized for energy.

The results of the study indicated that the men taking green tea extract had significant better energy expenditures and respiration quotients. In addition, the men who had used the green tea extract burned more fat calories than individuals using a placebo. However, there was no difference in fat and calorie burning between caffeine users and placebo users. The researchers determined that substances in green tea extract altered the body's use of a chemical transmitter in the nervous system, increasing the rate of calorie burning. The scientists also found that use of green tea extract did not result in an increase in heart rate.
